A cyberattack, a power failure, or a physical defect can be enough to bring a company's operations to a halt. Many companies rely on their regular backup in such situations. But a backup is not an emergency plan. If the infrastructure is down, it doesn't help much to have the data ready in a backup but no access to functioning servers on which that data can be restored.
What matters is not just regularly backing up data, but the plannable restoration of systems. This is exactly where Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) comes in. It's not about the often-cited "seamless" switchover without any interruption, which is usually unrealistic. It's about keeping the recovery time (RTO) low and having a validated, working plan for what happens when parts or all of the infrastructure fail, for example due to encryption (ransomware).
RTO (Recovery Time Objective)
How long can a system be down before the company suffers serious harm? This defines the maximum acceptable recovery time.
RPO (Recovery Point Objective)
How much data loss is tolerable? This determines the frequency of data replication.
A solid DRP also defines who makes decisions in a disaster, how communication happens, and in what order systems are brought back online (runbooks).

A disaster recovery plan (DRP) is the organizational and technical foundation for a crisis. It clearly defines risk management parameters and escalation paths. The core metrics include:
A backup is a copy of your data. DRaaS, on the other hand, is the on-demand provisioning of compute, storage, and network infrastructure.
If your primary IT environment fails, a pure backup often requires procuring new servers, configuring networks, and installing systems before the data can be restored. This process can take many weeks. DRaaS provides you with a software-defined failover site. Your virtual machines are backed up regularly. In an emergency, these systems are started up in the DR data center, following a prepared runbook.

Your systems are synchronized according to the defined RPO intervals. In the event of business interruptions, the emergency plan kicks in and the replicated environments take over. Integration into the cloud stack ensures that networks and firewall rules are correctly mapped in a failover scenario.
A plan on paper is worthless if it isn't tested. We support you not only in providing failover capacity, but also in the technical design and regular testing of your disaster recovery plan, to meet certification requirements (such as ISO 27001).

Frequently asked questions
A backup protects against data loss (e.g. an accidentally deleted file). Disaster recovery restores the operation of the entire IT infrastructure after a major outage (e.g. fire, ransomware encryption) on replacement hardware.
The RTO defines how quickly systems must be back up and running after an outage (duration of the outage). The RPO defines the maximum tolerable data loss, measured in time (e.g. the state from 4 hours ago).
Without regular testing and the technical infrastructure kept in reserve (a failover site), there's no guarantee in an actual emergency that network configurations fit, licenses work, or dependencies between systems start up in the right order.
